What’s with the name?

A lot of people ask us, why “Salty Dog Solutions”?

Before Eric started this company, he had worked in the U.S. Virgin Islands for a couple of years.  When he returned to Madison, he wanted a name that would reflect that period of his life.  And since he still had clients in the U.S. Virgin Islands as well as Trinidad, he was looking for something associated with the sea.

He actually wanted to call it Saltwater Solutions, which he thought was a clever play on words.  His attorney discouraged him from this though, as there is a fish store in Florida with that name.  Oh well.  After bouncing a ton of names off friends and family, he finally settled on Salty Dog Solutions.

What’s a Salty Dog?  Well, literally it’s a dog that spends time in seawater.  We all like dogs, and in fact Eric’s often comes into the office and sits at his feet while he works.  But a  Salty Dog also connotes more things we enjoy:

• It’s a sailor.
• It’s the name of a great song.
• It’s a cocktail containing grapefruit juice and vodka (greyhound) with salt around the rim like a margarita.
• Most importantly, it’s a memorable name, which is important according to Eric’s Marketing 101 professor.
